More on Business Cards: Cards with Planetary Gears Inside; and a Catapult Card

Like I said here, I’m a fan of simplicity in business cards, but these geared cards, made by a guy named Adam Mayer, are very cool. Not only are they aesthetically interesting, they also offer functionality, in that they can scroll through the information on the gears. Great concept, great design.

Here’s the link to it’s Thingiverse page.

You think that’s cool? Check this out, the Cardapult… Catapult card:

Joel Bauer and the Art of the Business Card: “OMG, It even has a watermark…”

This is Joel Bauer, his card doesn’t belong in a Rolodex, it belongs on your desk. Framed. Where the picture of your daughter used to be.
-Clay

This is Joel Bauer, and his business card would go directly into my trash bin. His whole argument for why it’s a great card, the fact that it’s non-traditional and oddly shaped, is the reason. The fact that it doesn’t conform to the traditional 3.5″ by 2″ size means that it won’t fit in my wallet or business card holder. That, compounded by the fact that this guy is obviously a douche and people will see that when they meet him and get his card, means that his $4 dollar cards are going, more often than not, right in the trash.

He’s right about some things though:
Paper quality is important, and so is the ink quality and color. High gloss is nice, and double-sided cards can be super fantastic, but if you can get your point across on one side, I think it always works better. Too much color and mayhem can make the card distracting. He’s right about the message too, it should tell people what you do in a meaningful way, without being confusing and overly complicated. Most importantly, the card needs contact information. Every possible way of contacting you or your business should be on that card. That means, of course, name, phone number, fax number, email, and website.

After the “read more”, we have a collection of some interesting and quality business card designs that actually do work well, as opposed to Joel’s:

KFC and PETA Fight To Fill Potholes

Potholes

The free market works.

It’s been less than a week since chicken chain KFC offered to pay for the repair of potholes in some cities so long as they could advertise over the patch, and there’s already a bidding war for the job. PETA has offered to pay double what KFC has, so long as they can stencil in their own, anti-KFC, advertisement, pictured below.

How Accurate Were AT&T’s “You Will” Ads From 1993

AT&T had a series of commercials back in 1993 that had examples of some of the cool new technologies that the company had hoped to develop in the future. The ad agency that did the commercials must have had a professional futurist working for them, because they were strikingly accurate.

It’s now 15 years later, lets see how well they did:

WTF Product: I Really Hope LoveLice Are Real

lce-716991

Everyday the internet exists, it seems another sexual fetish springs into existence. According to “Rule #34″, “if it exists, there is porn of it“; and this definitely appears to be the case. LoveBugz.net is a website that supposedly supports the practice of keeping a specially bred strain of Japanese “pet” pubic lice in your pubic hair and sharing them with your sex partner. There are a million reasons to believe this is a hoax, but only one reason to believe it’s real; and that one reason is that it’s amazingly hilarious.

According to the website:
“…they just live happily in your underwear. It’s so COOL! They grow, and have families. You can feel em living and crawling around. It’s like having personal Sea monkeys in your pants ;-) Seriously, though, they really are my personal pets that go everywhere with me. You get attached to them like any pet.”
Indeed, sounds lovely. Read on for the whole story:

Chi-Chi-Chi-Bama: Special Edition Obama Chia Head

chia-obama-animated-21

Joseph Enterprises started the Chia Pet in 1981 and it’s remained lodged in our collective unconscious every year since then because of massive advertising every holiday season and a weird kitsch appeal that never seems to get old. I honestly still think these things are cool; you do too, admit it.

Now they’re capitalizing on Obama-mania with an ultra-classy likeness of the 44th President. There are two versions of Chia Obama: Happy Chia Obama, and Determined Chia Obama. Joseph Enterprises accurately portrays the full range of our president’s emotional expressions.

Very nice. You can order your very own from the Chia Obama website

2009: The year cable and satellite died

hulu-screenshot.jpg
Online TV is now a viable alternative to cable and satellite. And it’s much cheaper.

I’m going to make a bold prediction. 2009 will be marked as the year that cable and satellite TV died.

Now, you may think that this is a groundless prediction made simply for the sake of being provocative. But hear me out. Let me make my case.

The Color of 2009: Whatever Pantone Says

gretag-macbeth_colorchecker.jpg

I have somewhat of an obsession with colors and their names or designations. Whenever I can get my hands on color guides or paint sample booklets, I snatch them up. For instance, I have boxes full of those Pantone Guide strips; and having worked in the automotive industry, I have literally piles of automotive production color books with samples of all the exterior colors from various cars. I have samples from nearly every year of nearly every major make and model of car. There is something about the classification of color; I’m fascinated with the taxonomic designations and, more importantly, the aesthetic of all the sample colors lined up in neat rectangles with numbers beneath them.

Anyway… Mimosa. Mimosa is the color of the year, according to the “global authority on color”, Pantone. Read on about 2009′s color:

Japanvertising: Spiderman Selling Apartments

dannychoo_spiderman2.jpg

Tokyo resident and blogger on all things Japanese, Danny Choo, caught this image of Spiderman in a suit, selling apartments in the classy Bloom tower project. Japanese people can’t get enough of masked uperheros.

I’d love to know how much the Bloom tower folks had to pay Marvel for that one image.
