Verizon Fios Commercial – A Crowd Follows A Crowd

A common marketing technique is to just say “Look, mister customer, everyone else is doing it, so should you.” That’s precisely what Verizon does in one of its recent Verizon Fios commercials.

Two men enter the hallway of an apartment building. Both are wearing work uniforms with their names embroidered on their pockets. They walk in opposite directions, heading toward each other. With a casual hello and the standard inquiry as to how work is progressing, the two stop for a quick conversation.

The Verizon Fios employee responds warmly to the other company’s employee. He looks down at his clipboard (which is rumored to actually the new Amazon Kindle) and gives a rundown of his work for the day. He is doing several installations. He lists off the names of his customers and their various apartment numbers. He then politely asks what the other man has to do that day.

The employee for the other company looks down at his clipboard. He reviews his list of assignments for the day. Nonchalantly he too begins to list off his jobs for that day. The employee reports he is fulfilling a few cancellation requests. As he gives the names and apartment numbers of the cancellations he is taking care of, they both realize he is completing cancellations for all of the Verizon Fios installation requests.

Uncomfortably the Verizon Fios man tries to express regret over the unfortunate event. The other man brushes off the Verizon Fios employee’s attempts. He cannot be placated with words of sympathy. This man is taking their business from them. The situation does bode well for the man’s future at his company. The inference is obvious; everyone is switching to Verizon Fios. They must provide the better service.
